History
The UK has a rich history. This small island nation, which used to have an empire covering nearly a quarter of the global landmass - the largest empire in the history of the world - has also experienced many military invasions: Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans have all made successful conquests. As a result, the British have a very mixed ethnicity, and English is a language that is made up of many different tongues: Anglo-Saxon, Viking Norse, Norman French, Latin, Greek, and even more unexpected ones such as Hindi and Arabic.
Today, the United Kingdom consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, whilst not part of the UK, are nontheless British territory. People sometimes thus refer to the "United Kingdom and Islands".
